Although I wasn't able to attend last Tuesday's Citywide PTO meeting, Bridge Director Jennifer McAllister was kind enough to act as scribe for the group. Here's a quick summary of what she sent:
* As a follow-up to the recent middle school night, middle school parents can expect an updated letter from Principal Conway regarding next school year. Also, he will hold two meet-and-greets this summer to reach out to middle school parents. (My note: those sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, July 8th from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. and Wednesday, July 30th from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at MVMMS. No agenda or speakers - just a chance for the community to talk with Mr. Conway.) The new Roosevelt Principal, Mary Beth Maranto, is also expected to hold a meet-and-greet this summer for parents.
* Earlier in the year PTO's wanted to know how to proceed if they wanted to purchase technology for their school. In response to this request from the PTO, the Superintendent said there is a need for Chrome Books (tablets, cart, and management software) for grades 3-5 and depending on the school there may be a need for iPads or iPad Minis for grades K-2. However, the Superintendent stressed the importance of equity among the five buildings as well as being cautious in assuming district responsibilities. If PTO's decide to help purchase technology for their school, they need to consult with Melrose IT Director Jorge Pazos regarding the specifications for any purchases and purchasing through approved vendors.
* A question was raised regarding the increasing cost of field trips, and the response was that field trips are determined at the building level. It seems that the increase in the cost of the field trips are mainly related to the increased cost for transportation and busing this year. Some school PTO's support field trips by paying for the cost of busing of students to/from field trips.
